Topic: Recent issue with Mac OS 10.5 Leopard (running and installation)

Hi there,

We've been quite happy with our Giggles Nursery Rhymes but have recently encountered a problem. We would like to have the app on both the parents' administrator account as well as our sons' non-administrative accounts.

However, when installing from the non-administrative accounts, it fails. Inspecting the log says the installer did not have permissions to /Applications/....

I tried just creating an alias from the administrative account and making that available to my sons' accounts.... Upon launching, the icon bounces in the dock for a while but does not load. After a long time (30 min or more), it eventually times out with an unexpectedly quit error. After doing this a few times, the app seems to get corrupted even on the administrator's account, forcing a reinstall.

The Leopard installer patch doesn't seem to apply since we're running Nursery Rhymes.

Running 10.5.6 on a PowerPC G5 iMac with 1.5GB RAM and lots of available disk space.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Steve.

Hi,

All of your assumptions and findings are correct: you'll need Admin priv's to install the program and you cannot run the program from a different account from within the limited account.

The solution is actually pretty simple: enable Admin privs on the limited account temporarily to install the program, then disable the again after it is installed. Everything should then work within the limited account. You only need the Admin priv's to install the software but not to run the software. Limited accounts can't install software, part of the limitation. This is so your children do not install programs you don't want on there.

Hope that helps.

Tim

Another thing that we've recently learned is that if you have Parental Controls enabled on an account, it can cause the program to not function and/or launch. the solution to this is to place the program in the Shared Folder inside the Users Directory on your computer. It should then function with Parental Controls enabled.
